Routes to avoid posted “No Trucks” section of S Gun Club Rd in Aurora, CO

Last Edited: April 22, 2014 // by TruckerScape, Inc.

From I-70 EB and WB X289 for E-470 SB and from E-470 SB North of I-70 (Toll Routes)

In January 2014 a section of S Gun Club Rd in Aurora CO was made off limits to through trucks and is patrolled.  If you are caught using that section of road you will be ticketed and lose points against your driver’s license per Colorado State law.  The posted section runs south from E 6th Pkwy to its lighted T intersection with Hwy 30 (E 6th Ave).

The posted section is a 2-lane road, first crossing a wash that floods badly during heavy rains then going up a short, steep hill that you can spin out on in snow or ice storms.

Drivers delivering to big box stores in the Southlands Shopping Center from I-70 have been taking this off limits route whether by choice or from GPS or other directions.  From I-70 EB you reach S Gun Club Rd by taking X289 for E-470 toll way, turning R at end of ramp on the short non-toll approach to E-470 SB to first light, then L at this light onto I-70 Frontage Rd to quick R at a T intersection onto Gun Club Rd SB.

From I-70 WB you reach S Gun Club Rd by taking X289 for E-470 toll way, turning L at end of ramp onto the short non-toll approach to E-470 SB, crossing over I-70 and driving through lighted ramp intersection on far side of I-70 to next light, then L at this light onto I-70 Frontage Rd to quick R at T intersection onto Gun Club Rd SB.

If you are already on E-470 SB approaching I-70 and want to minimize your toll charge from that point, you can reach S Gun Club Rd by taking X20 for Aurora Denver / Limon.  The exit ramp will take you under E-470, through a lighted intersection with E 19th   Ave, then onto the short non-toll approach to E-470 SB.  Continue on this short highway section through lighted ramp intersections near and far sides of I-70 to the next light.  Turn L at this light onto I-70 Frontage Rd to quick R at T intersection onto Gun Club Rd SB.

Gun Club Rd SB becomes N Gun Club Rd and then becomes S Gun Club Rd approximately 1.2 miles south at the intersection with E 6th Pkwy.  The E 6th Pkwy intersection is not controlled with a light or stop sign your direction, but is the first RT you can make.  You can avoid the posted section of S Gun Club Rd by turning R at this intersection, then L on the entry ramp for E-470 SB.

From the next exit off E-470 SB, X16 Jewell Ave, you can re-join the legal portion of S Gun Club Rd, which has become Hwy 30 (S Gun Club Rd).  Turn L at the end of the ramp onto E Jewell Ave, cross over E-470 and drive through the ramp intersection on the far side of E-470 to the next intersection, with Hwy 30 (S Gun Club Rd).  This is a lighted intersection and Hwy 30 (S Gun Club Rd) has 4 lanes here.  That makes it fairly easy to turn R.  You can then continue to the Southlands Shopping Center.

The above routes have kept you legal and minimized your toll charge from the I-70 exit ramps and from E-470 SB at I-70.  However from the I-70 exit ramps you could more easily just stay on E-470 SB approach highway onto E-470 SB to X16 Jewell Ave.  If already on E-470 SB you could just continue on it past I-70 to X16 Jewell Ave.

Another way to reach the Southlands Shopping Center from E-470 SB is to stay on it to X10 Smoky Hill Rd and turn L at the end of the ramp onto E Smoky Hill Rd.  You can then turn L onto the main shopping center entry street (S Main St, at a lighted T intersection L with a “Southlands” brick wall sign on far L corner), or continue to S Aurora Pkwy on the far side of the shopping center to reach several other major entry streets.  (Hwy 30 (S Gun Club Rd) SB has changed back to S Gun Club Rd and then become S Aurora Pkwy before reaching the shopping center.)

The disadvantage of any these E-470 SB routes is the sizeable toll for trucks.  There is no toll booth; your truck license plate will be photographed and your company billed by mail.  As a convenience, your company may purchase an “ExpressToll” windshield sticker for your truck.  That enables auto billing against your company’s credit card.  If you have a sticker you might prefer the E-470 SB to E Smoky Hill Rd route.

From I-70 EB and WB X285 for N Airport Blvd SB (Non-Toll Route)

A non-toll alternative off I-70 is to take X285 N Airport Blvd SB to Hwy 30 (E 6th Ave).  You will pass Flying J near R corner at lighted E 32nd Ave intersection, then cross major lighted intersections at Smith Rd and US-40/287 (E Colfax Ave).  As you approach Hwy 30 (E 6th Ave) you will cross minor T intersection R’s with E 8th Ave and E 7th Ave.  Hwy 30 (E 6th Ave) is major lighted intersection with white-on-green “6th Ave” OH street signs on near L corner and far R corner on light standards.  Gas station on far R corner and large open field on near L corner.

Turn L on Hwy 30 (E 6th Ave) and stay on it approximately 5 miles to join with the end of the posted section of S Gun Club Rd at a lighted intersection.  The posted section of S Gun Club Rd joins Hwy 30 (E 6th Ave) from your L, forming a T intersection.  A Shell gas station is on your far L corner of this intersection.  From this intersection on to the South, Hwy 30 (E 6th Ave) becomes Hwy 30 (S Gun Club Rd) and trucks are permitted on it.  Continue south on Hwy 30 (S Gun Club Rd) to Southlands Shopping Center.

From I-225 SB and NB S Parker Rd SB Exit (Non-Toll Route)

Another non-toll alternative via E Smoky Hill Rd is to take I-225 to the S Parker Rd SB exit.  Take S Parker Rd south, then turn L onto E Quincy Ave.  This is a major lighted intersection with a Shell gas station and a Furniture Row sign on near L corner and Furniture stores set back on near L corner.  Then turn R onto S Chambers Rd at the third lighted intersection.  (This is the second major lighted intersection—at the first major lighted intersection E Smoky Hill Rd makes a wide angle R off E Quincy Ave with a dedicated RT lane.  However an island at this intersection makes a RT difficult.)

Both E Quincy Ave and S Chambers Rd are 6-lane streets and a RT onto S Chambers Rd is a much easier way to reach E Smoky Hill Rd.  This intersection has a white-on-green “S Chambers Rd” street sign on far R corner on light standard and a gas station on far L corner with a white walled “Mission Viejo” sign in front of it.  Drive on S Chambers Rd to E Smoky Hill Rd at the next major lighted intersection.  A Starbucks Coffee is on near R corner.  S Chambers Rd has a dedicated LT lane and E Smoky Hill Rd is a 6 lane street and makes a wide angle L off S Chambers Rd.  Turn L onto E Smoky Hill Rd and continue to the Southlands Shopping Center.  You will cross over E-470 and then see the S Main St entrance to the Southlands Shopping Center at a lighted T intersection L with a “Southlands” brick wall sign on far L corner.

NOTE:  Detailed knowledge about specific sites in the Southlands Shopping Center and vicinity will follow in the coming months.
